How often a Toronto chimney actually needs sweeping
NFPA 211 says inspect annually and sweep as needed. In practice, Toronto usage patterns fall into three bands. Occasional weekend fires — roughly one cord a year or less — usually need a sweep every 18 to 24 months, with annual inspection regardless. Regular winter use of two to three cords needs an annual sweep. A wood stove used as a primary heat source needs sweeping twice a season.
Fuel matters as much as frequency. Unseasoned wood — anything above about 20% moisture — produces several times the creosote of properly dried hardwood. Much of the firewood sold roadside across the GTA in the fall was split that summer and is nowhere near seasoned. A moisture meter costs $25 and will save more than that in sweeps.
The other Toronto-specific factor is the exterior chase. Chimneys built on the outside wall of a house — extremely common in 1960s–1990s GTA subdivisions — run colder than internal masonry stacks, so flue gases condense faster and creosote accumulates faster. Those systems tend toward the shorter end of every interval.
Creosote degrees and why the grading matters
Degree 1 is a light, dusty soot that brushes off easily. It means the system is burning hot and dry. Nothing to worry about.
Degree 2 is a hard, flaky black deposit. It signals cooler flue temperatures — restricted air, oversized flue, or damp fuel. Removable with a rotary head, but a warning sign.
Degree 3 is glaze: a shiny, tar-like coating that has fused to the liner. It is highly combustible, cannot be brushed off, and is what turns a small chimney fire into a 1,100°C event that cracks clay tiles. Treating it requires a chemical modifier applied over several burns followed by mechanical removal — $390 to $890.
A sweep who never mentions a degree is not grading, and grading is the part that tells you whether to change fuel, change burning habits, or reline.
Signs you need a sweep before the next scheduled one
Smoke rolling into the room on start-up that clears once the flue warms. Usually draft, sometimes blockage.
A sharp, tarry smell in summer when humidity rises — that is creosote absorbing moisture, and it is the most common July call we get.
Black debris on the smoke shelf or falling into the firebox.
A visible bird or squirrel nest, or scratching sounds. Chimney swifts are protected in Ontario and cannot legally be removed while nesting — we schedule around it and cap afterwards.
Any chimney fire, however small. Even a brief flue fire requires a Level 2 inspection before the next use.
