What a real chimney sweep actually looks like

A proper chimney sweep is not a chimney brush pushed once and a broom on the hearth. It's a controlled, containment-first process that removes creosote from every square inch of the flue liner, verifies clearance with a camera, and leaves your living room cleaner than we found it.

Our crews arrive with drop cloths, a HEPA vacuum, rotary sweep rods, and a video scope. We set up containment first โ€” the vacuum runs the entire visit โ€” then run the rods top-down through the full length of the flue. When the brush comes out, so does the creosote.

After the mechanical sweep, we run the camera. This is the step most cut-price sweeps skip. A camera scan is the only way to see cracks, offsets, and third-degree glazing that a brush can't touch. You get the footage.

Why Toronto chimneys need annual sweeps

Ontario winters are long. A typical GTA fireplace runs 80โ€“150 fires per season, and every one deposits creosote on the inside of the flue. NFPA 211 โ€” the code most Toronto insurers reference โ€” recommends annual inspection and cleaning as needed.

Toronto homes have two Toronto-specific problems: century-brick chimneys with clay liners that crack in freeze-thaw, and newer high-efficiency inserts that burn cool and generate more creosote per fire. Both mean the safe sweep interval is closer to annual than every other year.

A 1/8 inch layer of creosote is enough to sustain a chimney fire. Annual sweeping keeps you well under that threshold, extends the life of your liner, and โ€” importantly โ€” keeps your home insurance valid.

Fixed pricing, no add-ons at the door

Standard single-flue sweep: $189. Includes full camera scan and PDF report. That is the entire price 92% of Toronto homeowners pay.

Second flue (same visit): +$79. Cathedral or three-storey access: +$60. Second-degree creosote requiring chemical treatment: +$95. Any adder is disclosed in writing before we start โ€” never at the door.

If we quote $189 and the job takes four hours because of hidden damage, it's still $189. Fixed price. In writing. Always.

What happens after the sweep

You get a photo-documented PDF report emailed within 24 hours. It includes creosote grade, liner condition, cap and crown photos, draft test result, and any recommended follow-up work with fixed pricing.

If the report shows nothing wrong โ€” great, book us again next year. If there's a repair we recommend, the quote is in the same PDF with no expiry pressure. Shop it, sit on it, or book it. Your call.

What Toronto homeowners say

"Booked a sweep and WETT inspection before winter. Crew arrived on time, laid down drop cloths, and walked me through the report photo by photo. Fixed pricing, no upsell โ€” exactly what was quoted."

โ€” Sarah M.

"Cracked clay liner in our 1962 fireplace. They installed a stainless liner and new cap in one day and the draft is perfect. Warranty paperwork emailed the same evening."

โ€” David R.

"Called for a raccoon in the flue. They removed it humanely, sanitized the smoke chamber, and installed a stainless cap. Fair price, no drama, and they even followed up a week later."

โ€” Priya S.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a Toronto chimney be swept?+

For a wood-burning fireplace used regularly through the GTA winter, annual sweeping is the safe standard. If you burn under 20 fires a year, every 18โ€“24 months is usually fine โ€” but you still need an annual visual inspection.

How much does a chimney sweep cost in Toronto?+

Our fixed price for a single-flue sweep is $189, including the camera scan and PDF report. That is the price most GTA homeowners pay end-to-end.

How long does a chimney sweep take?+

Most single-flue sweeps take 45โ€“75 minutes on site. Complex multi-flue chimneys or heavy second-degree creosote can take up to 2 hours.

Will a chimney sweep make a mess in my living room?+

No. We run a HEPA vacuum for the entire visit, seal the fireplace opening with a magnetic containment, and drop-cloth the surrounding floor. The vast majority of sweeps leave zero visible dust.

Do I need to be home during the sweep?+

An adult (18+) needs to be on site to let us in and sign the completed report. Beyond that, feel free to work from another room โ€” most of the visit is quiet.

What's the difference between a sweep and an inspection?+

A sweep physically removes creosote and debris. An inspection is a visual + camera assessment with a written report. Our fixed-price sweep includes an inspection โ€” you get both in one visit.

Can you sweep a gas fireplace?+

Gas fireplaces don't need traditional sweeping, but they do need annual service โ€” burner cleaning, valve test, thermocouple check, glass polish. Ask for the gas-fireplace service package.

Do you serve my neighbourhood?+

We serve every city in the GTA within a 50 km radius of downtown Toronto โ€” including Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington and Durham Region.
