What separates cleaning from a two-minute brush run
The flue is the easy part. The smoke chamber — the funnel-shaped void above the damper — and the smoke shelf behind it are where the heaviest deposits collect and where a rushed crew never goes. If your last cleaning took twenty minutes and nobody reached behind the damper, the most flammable part of your system was not touched.
Containment is the second differentiator. Soot is fine enough to hang in the air for hours and settle on every horizontal surface in an open-plan main floor. A sealed shroud plus a HEPA vacuum drawing negative pressure through the firebox is standard practice, and it is what makes the difference between a clean job and a week of dusting.
The third is verification. Without a camera you have no idea whether the liner is intact behind the soot. Cracked clay tiles, offset joints and gaps at the smoke chamber are common in Toronto's pre-war stock and completely invisible to a flashlight from the hearth.
Different Toronto chimneys, different cleaning methods

Factory-built zero-clearance fireplaces — the standard in Vaughan, Markham, Milton and most post-1985 subdivisions — have a thin inner liner and refractory panels that a masonry brush will wreck. These need soft rotary tools and panel inspection at the same time.
Oil furnace flues carry acidic sulphur soot that eats mortar joints from the inside. They are cleaned differently and inspected for the tell-tale white efflorescence on the exterior brick.
The summer smell problem
