Cleaning vs sweeping — is there a difference?
In the industry we use them interchangeably. Both mean the physical removal of creosote and combustion residue from the interior of your chimney flue. The difference is expectation: 'cleaning' usually implies you also want the smoke chamber, damper and firebox brushed and vacuumed, not just the flue.
Every one of our visits includes both. We clean the full path — cap to firebox — because you can't call a chimney safe if the smoke chamber is still coated.
The three degrees of creosote (and what each costs to remove)
Degree 1 — light, flaky soot. Standard sweep price. This is what an annual visit gives you.
Degree 2 — hard, tar-like glaze. Needs a rotary chain or chemical modifier before the brush works. Adder: about $95.
Degree 3 — glass-like, glazed build-up. Actual fuel. Requires a specialised chemical treatment applied and left, then a follow-up sweep. Adder: $250–$450.
We grade the creosote in your flue with a camera before we start and quote the correct level in writing. You never get 'oh, it turned out to be Degree 3' at the door.
What to do before we arrive
Don't light a fire for 24 hours before the visit — the flue needs to be cool.
Move fragile items off the mantel (we do it if you forget, but it's faster if you do).
Leave a clear 3-foot working area around the hearth.
That's it. We handle the rest.
The written report matters
Every clean ends with a PDF emailed within 24 hours. Creosote grade, before/after camera stills, damper and cap photos, draft-test result, and — if we found anything — fixed-price quotes for the follow-up work.

What creosote grade is dangerous?+
A 1/8 inch layer of Degree 1 creosote can sustain a chimney fire. Degree 2 and Degree 3 are actual fuel and need to be removed before the next fire.
