What a WETT inspection actually is

WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer. It's a Canadian training and certification program. When an Ontario insurance carrier asks for 'a WETT inspection', they mean an inspection performed by a currently-certified WETT inspector, documented on the official WETT form.

There are three levels. SITE-Basic — visual inspection of a readily accessible appliance. Most insurance renewals accept this. SITE-Comprehensive — adds dismantling, measurement, and moisture readings. Used for new installs, insurance disputes, and older systems. SITE-Verification — post-repair verification only.

When you actually need one

You need a WETT report when: you're installing a new wood-burning appliance, you're buying or selling a home with one, your insurance carrier is renewing a policy after 5+ years, or you're switching insurers and the new carrier requires it.

You don't need one when: your appliance is gas-only (WETT is wood-only), your existing WETT report is under 5 years old, or your carrier hasn't asked for one.

How to pass first time

Clear 3 feet around the appliance. Remove combustibles from the mantel. Have the owner's manual (or make/model) available. Have photos of the original install if you have them. Provide 2 hours access to the appliance and the chimney.

If any repairs are needed to pass, we quote them fixed-price in the same visit — no re-inspection fee if we do the work.

How the report reaches your insurer

PDF emailed to you within 24 hours (usually same-day). You forward to your broker, or with your permission we email it directly. Most Ontario carriers accept it as filed — no callback, no argument.

What Toronto homeowners say

"Booked a sweep and WETT inspection before winter. Crew arrived on time, laid down drop cloths, and walked me through the report photo by photo. Fixed pricing, no upsell — exactly what was quoted."

Sarah M.

"Cracked clay liner in our 1962 fireplace. They installed a stainless liner and new cap in one day and the draft is perfect. Warranty paperwork emailed the same evening."

David R.

"Called for a raccoon in the flue. They removed it humanely, sanitized the smoke chamber, and installed a stainless cap. Fair price, no drama, and they even followed up a week later."
