What TSSA registration means and why it is not optional
In Ontario, work on natural gas and propane appliances is regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Only a registered contractor with certified technicians may service the gas train, controls or venting on a fireplace. This is not a formality: unregistered work can void your appliance warranty, and in the event of a CO incident or a fire it can complicate an insurance claim significantly.
It also matters at resale. A buyer's home inspector who finds an unlisted or improperly vented gas appliance will flag it, and the file will land on your side of the negotiation. A service record from a registered technician resolves that in one email.
The faults behind most Toronto service calls
Pilot lights but goes out when you release the knob. Almost always a failed thermocouple or thermopile — a millivolt-generating probe that tells the valve the flame is present. A $220–$340 fix, and the most common call we take in October.

The CO test is the reason it matters. A direct-vent fireplace draws combustion air from outside and vents outside through a sealed co-axial pipe. A failed door gasket or a separated inner vent pipe turns that sealed system into an open one venting into your living room. It is invisible without instruments, which is exactly why annual testing exists.
