Propane vs natural gas fireplaces — the honest comparison
In Toronto proper, natural gas is almost always cheaper to run than propane. Where propane wins is homes that aren't on the natural-gas grid — rural GTA (Uxbridge, Clarington, Bradford, King, Georgina, Scugog, Brock).
Efficiency is nearly identical (both burn clean at 80–92% AFUE). Operating cost per hour is where they split: propane runs $0.85–$1.20/hour vs natural gas at $0.35–$0.55/hour. Over a Toronto winter, that difference is real money.
Verdict: if natural gas is available at your property, install natural gas. If it isn't, propane is a great alternative to wood — same ambience, easier operation, no woodpile to store.
What a propane fireplace install costs
Propane insert (replaces existing wood fireplace): $3,500–$6,500 installed, including venting and TSSA permit.
Propane freestanding stove (new install): $4,500–$8,500, including venting through the wall or roof.
Tank rental is separate — usually $80–$200/year via a local propane supplier. We handle recommendations for GTA suppliers.
Annual service is not optional
Propane fireplaces need annual TSSA-licensed service, same as natural-gas units. Burner clean, valve test, combustion analysis, and glass polish. Our annual propane service is $225, fixed price.
Skip it and you'll see: yellow flames, sooted glass, higher gas consumption, and eventually CO risk. The $225 annual visit pays for itself.
