Masonry repair is more than tuckpointing
A proper masonry chimney repair covers everything the chimney is built out of: crown (concrete cap on top), brick (structural walls), mortar joints (what holds the brick together), smoke chamber (interior masonry above the firebox), and firebox itself.
Most 'chimney repair' companies only do the flashy exterior work. Structural masonry — parging the smoke chamber, rebuilding the firebox, refractory work — is where we do the majority of our jobs.
Why smoke chamber parging matters
The smoke chamber sits above the firebox and below the flue. It's built from stepped brick and gets extreme heat. Old smoke chambers deteriorate — bricks fall out, mortar erodes, and gaps form.
The fix is 'parging' — a heat-resistant refractory coating troweled over the interior walls to seal them and improve draft. Cost: $650–$1,400. Payoff: safer chimney, better draft, longer chimney life.
Historical restoration
Toronto has thousands of pre-1940 masonry chimneys — Cabbagetown, Riverdale, Roncesvalles, the Annex, Rosedale. These need heritage-grade restoration: Type-O mortar, colour-matched brick, hand-tooled joint profiles.
We do this work regularly and we welcome heritage-committee involvement. Ask for the historical-restoration package.
What Toronto homeowners say
"Booked a sweep and WETT inspection before winter. Crew arrived on time, laid down drop cloths, and walked me through the report photo by photo. Fixed pricing, no upsell — exactly what was quoted."
— Sarah M.
"Cracked clay liner in our 1962 fireplace. They installed a stainless liner and new cap in one day and the draft is perfect. Warranty paperwork emailed the same evening."
