Oshawa sits 60 km east of downtown Toronto at the eastern edge of the GTA, from the Oshawa Harbour and Parkwood Estate up to the Taunton and Windfields subdivisions. The newer belt — Windfields, Taunton, Kedron and Samac — is dominated by factory-built zero-clearance and direct-vent appliances. They are not miniature masonry chimneys and must not be treated as such: they need manufacturer-matched tooling, refractory panel and gasket inspection, and a technician who knows the listing, not a wire brush.

On top of the build type, Oshawa records more freeze-thaw cycles per winter than the western GTA, and that cycling is the single biggest driver of joint and crown failure on the older stacks here.
