Why Chimney Tuckpointing matters in the GTA
Mortar is designed to fail before brick does — that's the whole point. When you can push a screwdriver into a joint, it's time. Waiting means the brick face starts blowing off next.
Pre-1960 Toronto homes almost always need Type-O lime mortar, not modern Type-N. We test a sample before quoting to make sure the new mortar is softer than the brick.
What the visit looks like
Grind or chisel joints to 3/4 inch depth, wet the joint, pack in colour-matched mortar in two lifts, then tool to match the original profile. Cover and mist for 3 days to cure.
Real Toronto pricing (2026)
Single side of a standard chimney: $650–$950. All four sides: $1,800–$2,600. Historic lime mortar adds 15–20%.
Why Chimney Experts
We do a free mortar-match test on request. Modern hardware-store mortar on a 1920s chimney is what causes brick spalling in the first place.
